Bert grew up on the farm and attended school at Heatherdell, then finished grade twelve at the Birch Hills School. Bert and Leona Tienkamp were married in 1959 and had four children over the next six years. They raised cattle and grain farmed for several years with the cattle farming ending in the early eighties.
