Obituary for Gerald Carl Markel

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Gerald Carl Markel, late of Christopher Lake, SK on October 28th, 2022, at the age of 70 years. Gerald was born on November 12th, 1951, in Regina, SK to Margaret & Carl Markel.
Gerry’s wish is to be cremated and to have his ashes spread at Eulas Lake, SK where he was able to make memories fishing with his boys and family. Gerry loved the north and being able to fly in and experience it with his boys meant the world to him. Also, along the dog sled trail where he ran his dogs, for him it wasn’t about competing in races, it was about spending time outdoors with his dogs, feeling free, and enjoying nature. He loved everything about dogsledding and the special bond that he had with his dogs. Gerry volunteered for the Canadian Challenge and the Torch River Sled dog races, enjoying the comradery with the mushers and the connection to so many people with the same passion.
Gerry was a grateful member of AA and celebrated 39 years of sobriety in September. He was forever grateful for his AA family and the richness they added to his life. He never lost sight of the special relationship that he had with his program and the many people that helped him along his journey.
Gerry will be lovingly remembered by his wife Laurie; his sons Patrick, Cameron (Erin), Orion, & Owen; his daughters Ramona & Danae; his grandchildren Isabelle, Talan, Jasmine, Lincoln, Isabelle, Liliah, Jacob, Brandon, Zach, June, & Christian; his great-granddaughter Luna; his sister Connie; his brother Dennis (Linda); his sister and brother-in-law Leslie & David; his nieces, nephews, great nieces, & great nephews Terry (Charlene, Jason, & Lucas), Christy (Greg), Jody (Molly), Andrew (Lynda, Tim, Stephanie, Amelia), Dylan, & Taylor, Jenny (Tim & Kayleigh) Cathie (Sam & Tessa).
Gerry is predeceased by his son Christopher; and his granddaughter Kasey; his parents Margaret & Carl Markel; & his parents-in-law Maxine & Dean Hall.
A private celebration of life will be held for family and close friends. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Gerry’s name to the Kinsmen Foundation (donations can be mailed to #2217C Hanselman Court, Saskatoon, SK, S7L 6A8, or by calling 306-244-6400) or the Diabetic Association of Canada (#1300-522 University Ave., Toronto ON M5G 2R5 or info@diabetes.ca).
