Obituary for Thurston K. Tomlinson
It is with sadness that the family of Dr. Thurston K. Tomlinson announce his passing on October 18 at the age of 82. He was born in Bacup Lancshire, England on September 19, 1937. He lived there till July 1940 when his mother (a Canadian), his brother and sister came to Canada. His father could not come because he owned a garage which was deemed an essential service. They came to Prince Albert to live with his grandfather K.R. MacKenzie. His father joined the family in March 1946 when he could sell his garage. Thurston, Thurst, T.K. spent all his life in Prince Albert, going to Central school (where Gateway Mall is), PACI and the U of S from 1955-1960 where he obtained a Honors BA in Zoology. He then went away to the U of A from 1960-1964 graduating with a Doctor of Dental surgery degree. He and his wife (Wendy Howard whom he married in 1960) then came back to P.A. to begin their life here.
For the first two years he practiced with the late Norm Godfrey, then in 1966 he bought the practice of the late Dr’s. Lorne and Mabel Connell. He continued to practice until his retirement in 1988. He was involved in his community, he golfed and curled, played hockey and his biggest passion is that he loved to Ski mostly alpine but cross country in later years. He tells the story that nobody drove to the Little Red, you had to Ski to 6th Avenue East, down the riverbank to the ice then Ski across the river to behind the Sanitarium. Ski all day then come home – then the horror stories of putting his feet in warm water and the pain as his feet thawed out. As his kids got older, they became members of the P.A. Kinsmen ski team and this involved many trips to meets. He became Alpine Chairman of the Sask SK Association and also a national level R race official. He continued to ski till his knees said no.
After retirement the winters were spent in Parksville and Tofino (daughter Jill lived in Burnaby) and summers at the family cabin at Emma Lake that they had for over 50 years.
Thurston was predeceased by his wife Wendy in May 2017. He is survived by his son Kent (Sharon Morgan) of Prince Albert, their daughter Eryn (Jarret Anderson) of Saskatoon and son Cole, daughter Jill Tomlinson (Ken Ludyk) of Edmonton, daughter Haley and son Rylan both of Edmonton. Sister-in-law Betty Tomlinson of Saskatoon, brother-in-law Wavel (Karen) Howard of Saskatoon and Terry Howard of Prince Albert.
Thurston was predeceased by his parents Harold and May Tomlinson, brother Doug, sister Isobel and her husband William Hancheroff of Edmonton and in-laws Wendall and Stella Howard.
There will be no Funeral Service at T.K. request. He has always said, “Love me in life, not in death.” Now it’s too late. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Thurston can be made out to a charity of the donor’s choice.
