Obituary for Dorothy Balon

January 7, 1953 – June 24, 2018
Dorothy Balon, late of Prince Albert, SK, passed away suddenly on June 24, 2018 in her home, at the age of 65 years. Dorothy was born in Prince Albert to Oscar and Mary Anderson on January 7, 1953. She attended school at Prince Albert Technical High and obtained her grade twelve. She moved to Saskatoon and graduated from the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences with a diploma in nursing. She married Bill Balon on November 12, 1977 in Prince Albert. She worked as an RN for Mont St. Joseph long term care facility for many many years and played a part in raising funds to develop a new building, a modern facility to better care for the residents. She was so proud of the new building. She then went on to work at the Herb Bassett Home and proudly retired in 2010 as one of the greatest nurses there ever was. She was involved with the Gateway Covenant Church and loved the people in her group. Her faith was very strong. She loved her family so much. Her favorite thing to do was go for family walks down by Crocodile lake and more recently go for scooter rides with her best friend Broozer down to Alligator lake. She liked to play cards and do puzzles, and all of the grandchildren were more than willing to help her out with those tasks. Summer time was her favorite. She spent many days out at the lake, soaking up the sun, playing with the grandchildren and making wonderful memories. Another favorite of hers was the Toronto Blue Jays. She watched those games and would literally cheer out loud and express disgust at some bad plays, all from her living room. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband: Bill Balon; parents: Oscar and Mary Anderson; brother: Herman Sletto; and two sisters: Irene Koehl and Rose Anderson (infancy). Dorothy is survived by her children: Andrea (Dexter) Laidlaw, Wendy (Trevor) Rowe, and Michael Balon; brothers: Brian (Tracy) Anderson and Norman Sletto. And the pride and joy in her life, her grandchildren: William, Matthew & Jeffrey Laidlaw, Kayla, Shelby, & Tyson Rowe, and Samara Ledoux; great-grandson: Connor Pickard; and best buddy: Broozer Balon. The family of Dorothy Balon wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Halyk and his nurse Colleen, the Coronaray Care Unit at RUH, Dr. Khan and the MERCY group at the Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the heart and stroke foundation or Canadian Diabetes association. We pray that someday, these and other diseases will be cured. Memorials may be given to Mackenzie funeral home. A Funeral Services will be held Thursday, June 28, 2018 – 2:00 pm at the Gateway Covenant Church with Pastor Seth Michael of the Gateway Covenant Church, officiating.
