Obituary for Muriel Helen Vancoughnett

October 26th, 1935 – January 1st, 2015

It is with overwhelming sadness and broken hearts that we say goodbye to a dear Wife, Mother, Grandma and Great-Grandma. Mom passed away New Year’s Day, January 1st, 2015 surrounded by all of her family whom she loved dearly and who loved and cherished her. Mom was born October 26th, 1935 to Jack and Ruth Vancoughnett, the youngest of seven children. Prince Albert was Mom’s lifelong home. She met Robert, our Dad, in August of 1955, at the Prince Albert Exhibition. Dad recalls everything about that day, even the weather. Dad married Mom in July of 1960 and through their union, two daughters were born, Terry in October of 1963 and Debra in February of 1965. After Debra was born Mom stopped working outside the home and stayed home to raise her girls. Mom worked full-time taking care of her family, her lifelong commitment. As a family, we spent many weekends and summer holidays at Candle Lake. Mom also loved the mountains and many summer vacations were spent travelling around British Columbia, especially to Radium Hot Springs. Growing up, we would come home from school to homemade cookies and milk, with all of our friends always welcome. There was no shortage of animals at our house, as Mom loved all animals and we constantly brought home whatever we found. Pets were always a big part of our lives. By the time we were teenagers, Mom decided to work part-time, and worked at the Holy Family Hospital in the Purchasing Department, retiring when the hospital closed. In January of 1991, Mom welcomed her first grandchild Nicole, and again in January of 1993, her second granddaughter Erica, was born. Mom now had four girls who she loved so much, and was so very proud of. Grandma was a key part of Nicole and Erica’s lives, as she helped raise them and was always there for them, no matter what. In 2013, Mom welcomed her first great-grandchild, Jaxson Noah Fontaine, to her family. She was overjoyed to witness his birth. Jaxson was a source of pride and joy to her, just as her daughters and granddaughters were. Mom was not only loved by her family, but her many friends as well. Mom and Dad had their regular coffee group that met every Wednesday afternoon. Mom loved planning parties, as each of our birthdays was always an event. Mom was looking forward to the annual Christmas – New Year’s party that she hosted the past several years with their friends. Mom and Dad would have celebrated their 55th Wedding Anniversary this July. They still held hands and Dad always made sure to kiss Mom goodnight. Mom was especially there for Dad these past few years after the loss of his leg. They looked after each other and truly loved one another deeply. Mom’s passing was sudden and unexpected. We thank God that we were able to be there with her, surrounding her with all our love. She was our rock, our glue, the centre of our universe and our best friend, and we don’t know what we will do without her. She was an amazing Wife, Mother, Grandma, Great Grandma and a great friend to all who knew her. Mom will be lovingly remembered by her husband: Robert (Elwin) Vancoughnett; her two daughters: Terry (Murray) Gilmour and Debra Vancoughnett (Brian Brassard); two granddaughters: Nicole Sauer (Jamill Fontaine) and Erica Sauer; and her precious great-grandson: Jaxson Noah Fontaine. She also leaves behind her two four-legged “kids”: Samantha (Sammy) and Baxter (Baxie), as well as her four “grand dogs”. A celebration of Mom’s life will be held on Friday, January 9, 2015 at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church, 1351 28th Street East, Prince Albert, SK with a lunch to follow. A family interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Prince Albert SPCA, Box 1832, Prince Albert, SK S6V 6J9, The Saskatoon Cancer Clinic, or The Heart and Stroke Foundation, 279 – 3rd Avenue N, Saskatoon, SK S7K 2H8. Arrangements in care of MacKenzie Chapel & Crematorium. Brian and Bev Stobbs, Funeral Directors. 306.763.8488 www.MacKenzieChapel.ca

We will never forget you. You will live on in all of us
