Obituary for Eileen Beatrice Orton

ORTON, Eileen Beatrice- long-time resident of Prince Albert, SK, passed away at the Birchview Nursing Home, Birch Hills, SK, on Friday, August 26, 2011, at the age of 90 years. Eileen was born on January 23, 1921, to Wilfred and Annie May Orton, on the family farm in the Coolidge District. She was the eighth of ten children. After completing high school, Eileen attended Normal School in Saskatoon. She then taught school for two and a half years prior to joining the Women’s Division of the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II, during which time she trained as a hospital assistant. After her discharge from the RCAF, Eileen attended the Victoria Union Hospital School of Nursing in Prince Albert and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1950. In 1954 she took a post graduate course in Obstetrics at the Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital in New Jersey. Upon returning to Prince Albert, she worked as Obstetrical Supervisor at the old Victoria Hospital School of Nursing, where she taught Obstetrics to nursing students and also supervised the Obstetrics department. In 1964, Eileen took a year off work to attend University to take a course in Nursing Administration. After the move to the new Victoria Union Hospital, she was employed as a Nursing Supervisor until her retirement in 1986. Eileen enjoyed her chosen career very much and developed friendships with many of her former students and co-workers which continued the rest of her life. After her retirement, Eileen became active in the Parkland Seniors, often driving others to the Seniors’ Centre for activities. As her health began to fail several years ago, Eileen was able to stay in her own home as long as possible with help from relatives and neighbours. When she could no longer stay alone, she took up residence for a few months at the Weldon Country Villa, and then moved to Birchview Nursing Home. Eileen was predeceased by her parents: Wilfred and Annie May Orton; all nine brothers and sisters: Louisa (Barney) Lewis, Daniel Orton, Margaret (Ernest) Wait, Lily Orton, Jane (Arnold) Wait, Lorne (Alice) Orton, Evelyn (Art) Reid, Nelson Orton, and Arthur Orton. She will be lovingly remembered by her many nieces, nephews and their families, her brother-in-law Art Reid of Birchview, as well as her long-time friends. Thank you to those who helped Eileen remain independent as long as possible and to all those who took care of her once she could no longer take care of herself. The Funeral Service will take place on Wednesday August 31, 2011, 2:00 pm, MacKenzie Chapel, 130-9th St. E, Prince Albert, SK. Interment at Prince Albert Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to Birchview Nursing Home, Box 578, Birch Hills, SK S0J 0G0. Arrangements in care of Northern Funeral Service, MacKenzie Chapel. Brian and Bev Stobbs, Funeral Directors. 306.763.8488 www.northernfuneralservice.ca
